How to Build Useful Content Pillars
August 24, 2026 · 5 min read
A content pillar isn’t a vague theme like "lifestyle" or "business." If a pillar can’t immediately suggest three video or post ideas, it’s too broad to be useful.
Good pillars are built around a specific audience problem, not a general subject. Instead of "productivity," a working pillar might be "how solo creators plan a week’s worth of content in under an hour." That’s specific enough to generate real ideas on demand.
Most accounts do best with somewhere between four and six pillars — enough to keep content varied, few enough to stay recognizable. More than that and the account starts to feel unfocused; fewer and it gets repetitive fast.
Once pillars are set, every new idea gets sorted into one of them. If an idea doesn’t fit any pillar, that’s a useful signal — either the idea is off-strategy, or it’s pointing to a pillar that’s missing.
